SOFTWASH FAQ

How do you clean a roof?

When feasible, we start by brushing the roof using stiff bristled nylon brushes. This first step loosens the already dead moss from the roof and is also effective at removing some of the larger pieces of moss. After we have removed what we can with the nylon brushes, we then use blowers to clear the roof of all debris prior to SoftWashing the shingles. The roof is then treated with a blend of water, salt-based bleach, and soap.

How often will I need to clean my roof?

Our cleaning process kills not only the visible moss on the roof, but also prevents any new growth from reoccurring for at least 3 years and potential as long as 5.

Our cleaning process and the chemicals we use conform to the California Air Quality Management District standard and do not release harmful VOC's. Will the chemicals you use hurt my plants or pets?

They are safe for your family, pets, and your plants and we take extra precautions to ensure your delicate plants are not harmed.

What can I expect to see after my roof is treated?

After treating your roof, all the moss, lichen and algae will be dead. The moss will turn bright white and fade to a dull grey over the next 6 - 12 hours. This process is gentle by design to protect the asphalt shingles. We allow natural processes to clear the dead moss from the roof. This is the recommended method for cleaning a roof by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association. You can read their technical bulletin on this subject by clicking here.
